I'm under the impression that muvaudio works by running multiple virtual soundcards, which are implemented totally through software.. and so the extra audio processing/effects that my soundblaster x-fi card is capable of isn't being used at all when recording with muvaudio. Is this correct (assuming it makes sense)?

It makes perfect sense and you are correct. Your hardware soundcard is not being used.
